On the way it turns from a comforting children's fable about growing up into something dark that's more for adults, especially men who'll remember what it's like to be a loving little boy one minute and an absolutely foul, destructive pest the next.

Max (Max Records) lives with his single mum (Catherine Keener) and teenage sister.

He's at the age where he still wants to play games but he's getting bigger and stronger. He can't handle new emotions and is lovable but selfish.

Banished to his room for biting his mum, Max flees instead into the night. He finds a boat and sails to a mysterious island inhabited by the Wild Things.

They are as untamed and unpredictable as he is and at first, little ones alert here, want to eat him.

But Max tricks them into believing he is a king and if they submit to his rule will make sure they are never sad or scared again.

At first Max relates most to Carol (voiced by James Gandolfini) because he is as enthusiastic and emotional as himself.

Max and the Wild Things run and jump and scream and start building a huge den where only they can go.

But the island has no rules and Max is only a little boy not a powerful king.

The strain of keeping the Wild Things, who sometimes bicker and bitch like an encounter group, begins to tell.

Max misses his mum.

The Wild Things a huge, hairy creatures and a hotch potch of many animals.
